i live in the art museum area of philadelphia, pa. my daughter rescued a dog in our neighborhood and now Charlie is mine. looking for something to do while walking Charlie, i thought about metal detectors (md's). one evening a guy was walking to his front door carrying a md. i asked him about it and his reply was "it's been in my closet since the baby was born (apprx 2 yrs ago). it works great. would you like to have it"? i said no (just kidding), brought it home, put 2 9v's in it and i'm soon off and detecting. the reviews for this model(Discovery 1000)via the web are positive along with its simplicity and reported effectiveness is why i'm giving it 3 stars without having used it yet.. i'm now looking forward to the next 100,000+ person event to find what others have left behind because I wish i had this md 2 years ago after the "save africa/aids/food for free"(or something like that)and 1,000,000 people had visited 3 blks from my house. WHAT A SCORE THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN!!!

Radio Shack Discovery 1000

I have had this detector for several years. Easy to use with its automatic balancing. A $10.00 swap meet special. I have used it in all conditions, mountain soil, playgrounds, lake sand and water and even in salt water - Puget Sound, WA. Found gold and silver rings, and silver coins. If I can't hear the sound I watch the analog meter. I don't use earphones as I often hunt in the forest and Bears and Cougars have been sighted.

What can one say but that a detector do and preform as wanted I have gotten from this machine more than expected. Have I found a wealth of treasures yes and no. I love the detector and enjoyed using it ? U better believe that I will suggest that a Discovery 1000 be used as 1 & only or as a 2nd back up detector. It Is a great beginner unit. thx's
