Cutlass 2

November 17, 2018
The Cutlass 2 is the best machine for finding coins buried within 4 inches of turf[Wet or dry]. If you want to find modern coinage in turf after crowd gathering events....This is the machine to use. I currently have two other Tesoro machines, each is used for different conditions. Cibola for woodland/fields [Not wet grass] and Tejon for ploughed fields and beaches.

An excellent starter machine

I bought a Cutlass II uMax just over a year ago for $100 CAD ($77 USD) and I have been very pleased with it. While not the deepest machine out there it does the job well. I use it in varying environments from the beaches to the shallow water to the parks, schools and playgrounds. It pin points well, cheap to run and is lightweight. Even though the machine is single tone it varies in the character of the tone and hopefully with time I will be able to learn to tell what is in the ground easily before it dig.

As an upgrade I waterproofed the unit so I could go into deeper water with it. Many folks where I live have much more expensive machines and yet I get more and better finds than almost all of them.
Most of the land digging I do is in parks and I easily get a quarter 6-8 inches down. I have detected a 1917 half penny at 8-10 inches in wet soil conditions. In dry soil do not expect more than about 6 inches depth for any coin. So far I have recovered 5 gold rings, one gold chain, 3 silver rings, 3 silver bracelets and 1 silver necklace as well as a bunch of silver ear rings. I generally use a discrimination of about 1.8 and the max sensitivity I can get away with usually 8-10 unless the is interference or it gets to chattery.
I find that in sand it is better to use all metal mode when coin hunting as sometimes Canadian clad signals get reduced, due to the iron content in the sand.

Cutlass ii

I use a Cutlass II µMax with the older Tesoro 7" concentric coil and it is a deadly combination. Setting sensitivity at 7 and disc at 4. It's a killer on nickels and other coins at this setting. This is my go to detector for parks and tot lots. I rate it at 5 stars.
PS its no slouch on jewelry finds either.

Wish i never sold her.

It was a very good no nonsense basic machine. Kept it in the car when I felt like digging around. I found some gold silver clad and plenty of trash but that is just my hunting style. If you can find one under 200 I'd say snag it. Can always resell for about the same price or a little less if you don't like it. Tesoros are pretty well built and hold value better then some other brands.
