I have been a detectorist for about three years now. MY vey first machine was a Whites Classic II but unfortunately it was stolen out of my car. Searching for a REAL machine that was not too expensive as well as offering some sort of target ID I chose the Prizm II. The first reason was because my Whites Classic II had worked consistently for three years without a problem and I wasnted to stay with that company. My second reason was where can you get a major brand detector with all these features for $199.95 (using website coupon).
I have found the Prizm II to be extremely powerful as well as easy to swing all day. The target ID is not as accurate as I had hoped but gives me a pretty good idea as to whether or not an item is worth digging.
Overall buy it!
Great for dry sand but you will have to turn sensitivity down to 1/3 for wet sand.

I just bought the Prism II with a trusted recommendation for White's detectors. I am new to detecting and didn't really know what to expect. I have been very pleased with the performance of the detector. It definitely takes some getting used to.
The detector has a digital display with discrimination based on US coins - Garbage and jewellery are included on this coin scale. This scale, I think is no better than numbers because I don't live in the US and there is a lot to find aside from coins. So I just use the scale as a rough guide. The scale, however, doesn't really work very well.
Often small objects and garbage will read the largest reading (50c). But if it is garbage, I've learned, the reading will be inconsistent. A coin or a solid metal object will read a constant signal - most bottle caps, foil, nails etc. will not give consistent readings. I would like to be able to have a little more accurate reading (1 decimal place numbers) as well and then be able to mark them myself in preset groups instead of the set coin values, but that's a function for more expensive detectors.
I would definitely recommend this detector to beginners and coin hunters - on and off the beach.
