OK, here's what I have found. I grabbed one on ebay for $70.00, once it
showed up I put batteries in and did some air tests. The unit wouldn't hit
a gold ring rubbed over the coil at minimum discrimination. So, long story
short. I took the unit and opened it up and sure enough there it was a
fisher 1280x aquanautt circuit board. Ahhhhhh. A few tweaks to the pots
with the screwdriver.
I went from a low tone to a high tone. Made the sensitivity a bit more enhanced and now the unit hits that nice 14kt gold ring at 6" air test. Sealed the unit back up with liquid rubber and took it for a trip to a local lake. Submerged the unit for 20 minutes of lake hunting and was pleased it never leaked and did find me a stainless chain, wedding band and .66 cents in clad.
Runs much hotter then my friends factory 1280x which bothers him a bit but, for a mere $70.00 I can't complain if I am finding more then he is. I'd buy another but having to take the unit apart to make some adjustments is a must to get it to run a bit hotter and more sensitive. It's worth it though.

I bought this detector because my Whites was not waterproof, I bought it
used off Amazon from a pawn shop and didn't read up on it until after I
bought it. It actually is a great detector, I use it a few times a week in
the local river where people tube on the weekends. I have found all sorts
of change and cheap jewelry.
I took it to the beach as well and it does great in the surf, I decided to do a little test at the beach and in my back yard and it finds a quarter at 12 in. The discriminator is not the best but it works. I am really happy with it. I did have to modify it a bit as it is not all the sturdy. To save you some money you can get this unit from Heartlandusa.Com for 199.00 marketed under the "gold Digger".
