It does find metal...
December 04, 2013
This Summer, I was introduced to metal detecting and just had to have
-something- to find coins, etc. While I was on a trip. The Harbor Freight
detector, combined with the Harbor Freight pin pointer, filled the bill in
that it is light weight, inexpensive, and can find metal in the ground.
After reading the manual and setting the sensitivity and discrimination to
the default settings, I took the machine and a pair of ear buds to a
sidewalk between our Disney resort and the bus stop.
In short order I found some trash with which I was able to fine tune the discrimination and sensitivity. ;) In the space of 40 minutes I dug a quarter, nine pennies, a Disney trading pin and some trash that was iffy on the machine.
I've now moved on to bigger and better detectors, but this little job stays in the car for when the 7 year old wants to swing a coil.
Pros: Light, cheap, will find metal. You can get this detector and a Harbor Freight (Centech) pin pointer for $60 if you have the coupons. Together, they will find the odd coin.
Cons: Light, cheap, no idea what you're digging until you dig it. The detector shaft (and locking collar) is very flimsy. Probably won't convince someone to take up detecting. If you are looking for a 'first' detector, get a Fisher F2 (two coil set with F-pointer). If you want something to locate those keys you lost in the front yard, get this.
Max Depth: 5 inches on US quarter
