Nokta fors core vs minelab explorer xs
The day after recieving it I went on a detecting trip to Maine so that's where I learned the machine. I purchased the pro package with three coils. I've always worked with larger coils but I started out with the stock, medium size coil. It's a great coil and while learning the machine I dug up many indian head cents, a few modern silvers, wheats. Etc.
My second day in we where hunting a 1700's church and I noticed an area that looked like a rather large Bush, shrub was removed, I recovered a 1836 capped bust dime. After bout 5-6 days I switched over to the large 15 inch plus coil. I did make a few more good finds with it but couldn't seem to keep it on the machine. Not a bad coil but not much more noticeable depth for the added weight.
We had a church in a small town in Maine we would end most or days at. I switched to the small 5 inch coil there and really started to realize the power of my core. The small coil is super deep, almost as deep as the 15 inch coil but also great separation with the small size. The recovery is also awesome. For me that the right combo for the fors core. With the small coil I dug an 1864 indian cent in au shape with great even beautiful green patina, 1837 large cent at 6 in. A skeleton key, a tintype photo, and many, many other relics.
The best test of the machine with the small coil was the last day, another large cent at 10 inches! 10 inch coin on a 5 inch coil! So much for diameter = depth! That trip was when I had just got the machine, my setting I kept default with the accept sensitivity amount 60 and displayed on 35 hunting di2a learning trip that taught me alot!
I recently picked up a minelab explorer xs. As I said I've used many machines in the past. I did an air test with the xs and the core. With iron and a coin in hand I ran them both under each machine with the stock coils on each. Minelab hit faintly when it did hit, the core NEVER missed the coin. Granted I'm learning the xs and I know the core well. My minelab experience is with the sovereign technology, the elite and the excallebor.
Not giving up on the explorer yet but at this point the nokta fors core beats the explorer hands down in depth, recovery and separation. If you don't have the small 5 inch coil for your core, you need one, it's the coil I keep on my core.

What a machine
What impressed me was one target read a higher tone so I dug it and found a spark plug. It picked up the copper core of the old spark plug from the iron. Overall the separation and recovery speed is impressive with good depth with the factory coil.
Only complaints are the vdi on pinpoint is in centimeters and the arm rest is a little small if you have big forearms. Overall it's a great machine that holds it own against more expensive machines, it's well built and designed, and the lighted display and built in flashlight is a nice accessory for night time detecting. It takes some time to get used to it but once you do you will be amazed at this machine.
