No depth meter, No VDI #'s.. So why did you buy it

October 30, 2005
if you feel you need those features? I just don't understand people knocking this Excellent detector because it doesnt have a few convenience features they enjoy using. It is a proven performer that is still one of the best in its class.

Personally my only gripe is the balance/ergonomics, after swinging a while it just feels off somehow. No big deal but not a detector I would want to swing all day. Its only real competition to date is the Fisher ID Excel which I personally rate a bit better in iron handling and Oh yeah, it does have those other features..

CL IDX.

October 04, 2005
I have the Classic IDX (CL IDX), which is the IDX-Pro only that it doesn't have the circuit that makes it go 2" deeper, not a big deal. The detector itself is very lightweight, comes with the deep 9.5" coil. I like this detector, it's simple but lacks some things.

The Good:

*Discrimination isn't the best, but it's good.

*Quick & Accurate pinpoint (pinpoint skills are up to you, not the detector).

*Lightweight, very lightweight.

*Comes with 9.5" waterproof coil.

*Goes deep (I got a zinc penny @ 9").

*Volume is good, loud, but not too loud.

The Bad:

*Ground Balance is INSIDE the casing (I hate Whites for this), but it can easily be solved with $70 by sending it for Mr.Bills mod @ www.surfscanners.com (the upgrade includes 3"-4" more in depth, a GB & Threshold knobs which are mostly needed). The mod will make it perform even better than the PRO version.

*The Threshold adjustment is INSIDE the casing.

*Jumpy target ID, REALLY jumpy.

*No tone ID! I hate Whites for this!

*No depth reading! Arg! Damn you Whites! This is the most invaluable feature and they left it out.

---------------------

It has flaws, but it's an Excellent machine.

Overall 3/5; 4/5 with the MR.Bill mods.

IDX Pro Short comings

January 27, 2005
I have had my IDX for a little over a year. It has proven to be a very good machine with a short learning curve. It is should have a depth meter and show the VDI numbers, I am not sure why white's left these off this model. I used it on Hampton beach with no problems- But yesterday I went to daytona and was not able to detect any sand that was wet. I tried adjusting all the available options, but it was too unstable and unusable. I don't know if this was due to the recent hurricanes washing most of the top sand away leaving high concentrations of black sand- or if this area is just out of the IDX capabilities. I am currently saving for a DFX model. If you are in the market for a new detector I would go to a higher quality model than IDX if you can afford it. DFX for 1,000 or Minelab Explorer for 1,300.

good machine, but they shorted it. why didn't they put depth, or vdi readout. overall an excellent machine. sometimes it won't lock on a target real well. But i love the coil it comes with.

Another detector that works very well, light weight, accurate I.D. meter. Add a Mr. Bill Mod and it becomes a deepseeking, relic monster in the all metal mode with visual target I.D. Remember that modifying a detector will void the warranty however in my case it was worth it. Five Stars with the Mr. Bill Mod!

dollar for dollar the best detector out there. I have found among other things:
cw bullets, buttons, large cents, farthings, half-cents, indians, on and on at some nice depths. Very easy to use.
use the factory pre-sets for frequency and sens.and set the unit's discrim. at two or three clicks below ring marker.
One trick: learn to pinpoint large targets well because when there is a large can top it will hit at the silver dollar mark. You can save yourself a lot of digging. The recovery on this unit is amazing. It is very accurate.
Best beginner into advanced detector made. Not a great beach machine but can be modified in order to achieve greater beach usage.

After searching and looking at many reviews and opinions on detectors, I purchased the IDX PRO. I was looking for something that has a short learning curve, yet not a toy, but a good solid detector that I could learn on.
Well, the IDX PRO is all of that. It has a excellent pin point feature, it is light and durable, turn on and go machine.

Kellyco suggested that I get this machine over the White ID three because of the extra depth. I retrieved coins thus far as deep as 7 to 8 inches.

This machine is an excellent detector for the seasoned or the newby detectorist, and I am looking forward to many more days hunting with it. -Joe
