Minelab quattro
All those years, of hard hunts, no matter how I used it it never gave up, but even an explorer ain't immortal. Just to be sure I got one for spare since you never know.....
Tried the quattro of course for pasture hunts and it rocked right away, just as the explorer 2. only complain for me is the gain setting on the explorer 2 , that is upreme since you can get a better idea of depth from actual target, a better perception if you like..
The quattro has volume, target volume and that volume does not affect the overall menu of the detector but is different then the gain. if I am really honest I feel the quattro is deeper, a tad, but it was deeper on average copper and silver coins burried in the garden.. but again, the explorer could pull out more info on depth just by audio.
I had no significant complains about the slow recovery speed as many forums talked about. The difference is very, very little if something at all.
If I had to choose amongst the two I would choose the quattro for beach wet sand hunting and the explorer on pasture .. but make no mistake, they both will do the job very well.
The complains that I have red about on forums I could not find and I consider myself a hardcore explorer user, I had many many hours on it, so I guess I would notice flaws in a minute .. explorer has more options, it is more tweakable to say. But the rumors that it falses a lot, was unstable, quirky, and exceptional slow I never experienced.
The whole explorer line up including the etrac are close to each other in effectiveness and depth. Ttrac has the edge of course for being the latest, it is slightly faster, but still not even the half of the speed form a deus.
I am very sorry but I used the etrac a couple of times to compare and everything it whistled on, on a test bed, the explorer 2 whistled along with him. Just did this review to tell the truth, there is nothing wrong with any of he explorer type detectors, in fact they hold their value very well, and are made to last long.. the fact that you never have to worry about ground balancing, and salty sand at beaches is a big thumbs up, but what is most important is that especially the explorers will teach you to watch your pace and investigate targets .

The forgotten machine.....
There is a learning curve with this machine but not a bad one a good one!!! It teaches you to slow down and LISTEN!!! This machine is more stable to use on the beach than the Etrac, Safari!! The Quattro is now my main beach machine and the Explorer 2 is my back up.

Minelab quattro metal detector
I actually love the slow sweep, the Explorer II is not much faster if any. I paid $350. If you are thinking about getting one I would strongly suggest it and like other people say in the reviews if anybody has negative things to say about this machine they probably didn't learn how to use it.

The Quattro is the deepest detector in my arsenal
I took it to a couple parks I hunted since 2001 and this detector was finding the coins and rings my other detectors missed, my advise is learn the detector before you get rid of it, it might surprise you.
The slow recovery speed does not bother me at all. The Quattro was replaced by the Safari but the recovery speed is still slow, wont surprise me if the safari gets discontinued after a couple of years just like the Quattro. For the price I would just save a couple hundred more and get a Explorer or a Xterra-70..
